Fishing

Attention All Fishing Enthusiasts:

The Ministry is gathering information about the harvesting of fish, turkey and migratory birds on Base and to that end, you will find forms covering each type of activity at Range Control.  We ask that all participants complete the forms to the best of their ability, even if you are unsuccessful.  This will assist the Ministry in its survey of what, where and how many species are being harvested as well as what pressure we are putting on these resources.

Thank you for your cooperation

Bill Rittershofer,
Fishing Director

Note: Due to current pandemic policies that may be in place, please be understanding that all activities are subject to change.

If you are new to the club or just not a comfortable and familiar with the area and looking to be mentored in club activities then see our new member’s corners for our mentor list.

To all the fishing enthusiasts of the Base Borden Rod and Gun Club, as your fishing director,  I would like to welcome you to the club and to some of the best fishing for Rainbow Trout and Chinook Salmon in South-Central Ontario.

  • The prime fishing river on Base is the Pine River. The season begins on the “fourth”(last) Saturday in April for Rainbow Trout and they can be actively fished through to early June. Salmon fishing will begin towards the end of August, with all fishing closed on the base on September 30.
  • Three of the most popular spots on the Pine are “The Pipes”,  the “Deer Feeder”  and the “Tioga Hole”.  Each year Mother Nature likes to rearrange things on the river so I would encourage members to walk the river and explore new hot spots”.
  • The Mad River does not offer the level of fishing that exists in the Pine.
  • Bear creek is out of bounds to angling.
  • The pond by the sugar shack (Catawampus Pond) is stocked primarily with Rainbow Trout and is open to all members after the Children’s fishing derby in the spring.
  • From Mid-June until end of August no access will be authorised through Blackdown cadet camp. All members wanting to fish Pine river/Deer feeder during this period shall enter the training area via gate 13.

Because Base Borden is a conservation area, we ask that no more than two of any species be harvested daily, even if Ontario catch limits state a larger number is allowed.

Please let me know if I can be of assistance in getting you out fishing.

Wishing you tight lines

Bill Rittershofer,
Fishing Director
